What causes tonsilitis?

you know how when your tonsils get to swollen and they have to be surgically removed. i just wanted to know what are the main causes of it. and what i should avoid i really dont want to have to go threw it. plus please answer. what the ages are for someone to get this. i heard at one time you should get it anywhere between 6 and 30.
