Did my mom do the right thing to save my cat?

This was a while back, my cat was on my hamper. It looked like it was dying not sure why. We had no money for the vet so we needed to improvise and fast! My mom suggested soda because it would wake up from the caffeine rush. So she poured soda in its mouth and it still didn't move. Just made a strange noise.
