How can I start to love my dad?

I'm 27 and my dad just celebrated his 60th birthday tonight. He gave a small speech, and in that he said he never thought he'd make it to 60. He has had 2 heart operations, and two severe heart attacks, one I witnessed alone with him, waiting for 911 to arrive. The problem is I hated him my whole life, because my mom who I'm estranged from now, told lies to me and my siblings about him to make us hate him. I may not have much time with him, and my heart is very closed and hurt. Does anyone have any advice or similar stories they can share?
