Anybody know anything about......?

Tibet. Is it/was it a separate country or is it/was it a region of China? Just gotta map and Tibet isn't on there. I always though it was a separate country my mate thinks it was a separate country once but now belongs to China? I've also heard it doesn't actually exist anymore!?!?!? Can anyone answer this for me please? ta. x
